Most platform engineering guides tell you what a good platform contains: standardize, secure, observe, govern. None of them explain why platforms that contain all four still fail. You build the standardized, secured, governed platform, and your engineers keep their own Terraform. They provision through the console. The Paved Road is a field guide from EverOps built on a single idea: a platform is a product, its only customers are your own engineers, and it succeeds or fails on adoption rather than architecture. Every chapter is measured against one question. Does this make the right way the easy way?

What the guides cover:
Adoption is the only metric. A platform can have 100% uptime and zero adoption at the same time. Fifteen clusters are not fifteen architecture decisions, they are fifteen adoption decisions that already happened.
Mandates choose the destination, never the route. How to sequence migrations so the platform earns adoption instead of demanding it, and why the unit of sequencing is the workload archetype rather than the team.
Standardization only counts as the default. Attacking over provisioning at the default layer, right sizing nodes and pod requests automatically, and why the unit of self service is the tenant rather than the cluster.
Security has to live on the road. A control that lives off it gets routed around. Four things belong baked into the default path rather than published as a checklist.
The measurement layer nobody builds. Infrastructure telemetry cannot distinguish a healthy adopted platform from a healthy ignored one. Both have green dashboards.
Guardrails, not gates. A gate stops everyone to catch the few who would do harm. A guardrail stops only the harmful action. This matters more as AI raises the volume of change hitting your review process.
