DevOps Maturity Assessment

A 6-week diagnostic that scores your delivery platform, operating model, and AI readiness against how comparable teams run today, then hands you a prioritized roadmap and a case you can take upstairs.
The Problem

Why DevOps Maturity Assessment?

Most engineering leaders inherit a delivery platform they didn't design and can't fully see. Newer services deploy cleanly while legacy services still carry manual gates and deployment windows. The team is smaller than it was, the people who knew why things were built this way have left, and the backlog of keeping the lights on crowds out the work that would fix it. Meanwhile AI adoption is moving fast in engineering and stalling at the edge of production, where elevated access makes "let the model act" feel unsafe. Leadership wants to know where DevOps actually stands against current standards and what to fund next year. What they usually get is anecdote.

Why It's Hard

A maturity score is easy to produce and easy to ignore. Generic frameworks grade you against an idealized model instead of against how teams like yours run under the same regulatory and headcount constraints. The real answer cuts across pipelines, infrastructure, observability, security control placement, and org structure at once, and the people with context are already stretched across audit season and on-call. Internal assessments inherit the assumptions of the people doing them. Vendor assessments find problems their product solves. Neither tells you which of your constraints are real and which are inherited caution.

The Accelerator Advantage

This Assessment compresses that work into six weeks with a light touch on your team. We score each pillar with evidence, benchmark your current state against comparable operators, and sequence every finding by risk and effort, so the team knows what to do first and leadership gets an honest baseline instead of a sales pitch. You walk away with a tactical readout your engineers can pick up on Monday, a strategic readout for the executive team, and a roadmap that treats your delivery platform as the foundation your AI investments will have to run on. The engineers who did the assessment are the same forward-deployed engineers who can execute it.

THE SOLUTION

What's Included

We assess your delivery platform across six pillars, score each one with evidence, and benchmark the result against comparable operators, so the roadmap reflects your environment and your constraints, not a reference model.
Discovery & Benchmarking
  • Stakeholder interviews across DevOps, platform, SRE, security, and engineering leadership
  • CI/CD review across legacy services and newer microservices: manual gates, deployment windows, staged rollout, and rollback practice
  • Infrastructure review against the Well-Architected Framework: orchestration strategy, infrastructure as code, developer portal, and disaster recovery posture
  • Observability and incident response review: instrumentation coverage, alert routing, on-call load, and tooling cost
  • DevSecOps review of where security controls sit in the delivery path and what is enforced versus requested
  • Operating model review: team topology, keep-the-lights-on versus build capacity, and cross-team dependencies
  • AI readiness review: where AI-assisted delivery is working today and where production access boundaries are the real constraint
Deliverables
  • DevOps Maturity Scorecard across all six pillars, with the evidence behind each score
  • Peer Benchmark comparing your current state to comparable operators in your industry
  • Prioritized Remediation Roadmap sequencing findings by risk and effort
  • Organization and Reporting Structure Recommendation covering team topology, capacity allocation, and where security should sit
  • Next-year DevOps roadmap with staffing recommendations against the work identified
  • AI readiness notes: what has to be true in your delivery platform before agents can safely act in production
  • Tactical readout for the delivery team and strategic readout for leadership
Outcomes
  • An honest, evidence-backed baseline of where DevOps actually stands
  • Clarity on which constraints are required by regulation and which are inherited caution
  • A team at reduced headcount spending its hours on what moves the needle
  • 30–50% faster deployment cycles once the highest-priority fixes land
  • A delivery platform assessed as the foundation your AI investments will run on
  • Leadership alignment on priorities and next-year investment, made on data instead of anecdote
  • A roadmap the forward-deployed engineers who wrote it can execute, with no handoff

Common Questions

"What happens after this Assessment?"

You leave with three options: execute the roadmap with your own team, engage EverOps on a scoped TechPod to deliver the highest-priority items, or move into an embedded platform operations team that carries the keep-the-lights-on load so your people can build. Most clients choose a scoped TechPod on the top two or three findings first. The roadmap is already sequenced and the engineers who wrote it are already in your environment, so there is no re-scoping and no ramp-up. There is no obligation to continue.

"We're benchmarked against a generic maturity model today. How is this different?"

Generic models grade you against an ideal. We grade you against how comparable operators in your industry actually run under the same regulatory and headcount constraints, and we tell you where your current controls are more conservative than the rules require. That distinction is where most of the delivery speed is hiding. It is also the difference between a scorecard that gets filed and one that changes next year's plan.

"How is this different from a vendor assessment or a big consulting firm's review?"

Vendor assessments find the problems their product solves. Large firms send a framework and a team that has never run production. Our engineers have built and operated delivery platforms in regulated environments, they look at your actual pipelines, infrastructure, and incident history, and they write a roadmap they are prepared to execute. The deliverables are editable and yours. The recommendation stands on its own whether or not you ever work with us again.

"Our team is stretched thin and we're heading into audit season. How much of their time does this take?"

That is the environment this Assessment is built for. We consolidate questions into a shared tracker and a Slack channel, interview the people with context for a few hours total, and meet only when a meeting is the fastest path. Access is read-only and scoped to how software is built and deployed, never your customer data. If SOC, PCI, or pen testing have your team through a given month, we schedule around it.

"We're also trying to figure out AI. Does this cover that?"

Partly, by design. The Assessment scores AI readiness as one of six pillars: where AI-assisted delivery is working today, where production access boundaries are the real constraint, and what has to be true in your delivery platform before agents can safely act in it. If you want a full scored assessment of your AI adoption, agentic platform, guardrails, and consumption, we pair this with the AI Opportunity Assessment as a concurrent workstream under one engagement. Most teams asking the question end up running both.
